GHL SMS Pricing in 2026: Text Message Costs Explained
Checked against HighLevel’s phone pricing guide on August 5, 2026. In the US and Canada, GoHighLevel SMS starts at $0.00747 per segment for both inbound and outbound messages. That is the base rate, not always the final amount. Carrier fees, A2P registration, phone numbers, MMS and longer messages can all change the bill.
When I audit a GHL account, I do not look at price per text alone. I check how many segments are being sent, whether workflows overlap and whether failed or filtered messages are wasting money. A clean workflow usually saves more than chasing a tiny rate difference.

Why one text can cost more than $0.00747
SMS is billed by segment, not by the message bubble you see in Conversations. A normal GSM message can hold up to 160 characters. Longer messages are split into linked segments. Emojis and some special characters can switch the message to Unicode, which lowers the character allowance.
For example, 1,000 short one-segment outbound messages have a base SMS cost of $7.47. If the same message becomes three segments, the base becomes $22.41 before carrier fees. This is why I always test the final message, including merge fields. A long first name or appointment detail can push a message into another segment.
Use HighLevel’s segment calculation guide when a campaign estimate needs to be exact.
Other charges to include
Carrier fees
US carriers add fees on top of the base SMS or MMS charge. The amount depends on the carrier, direction and message type. HighLevel also documents a fixed 5% location-level markup on pass-through categories such as carrier fees and A2P registration. Do not quote a client only the base segment price.
A2P 10DLC registration
Businesses using local US numbers for application-to-person messaging normally need A2P registration. Registration and monthly campaign fees are separate from per-message charges. The correct setup depends on the business type and messaging use case. If this part is blocking your launch, see our GoHighLevel A2P registration help.
Phone numbers, MMS and usage during a trial
Phone numbers are monthly charges. MMS costs more than SMS. HighLevel also states that telecommunications usage can be charged during a free trial. A trial lets you test the platform, but it does not make phone usage free.
How to reduce GHL SMS cost without hurting replies
- Remove duplicate workflow paths. Check whether two workflows can send the same reminder.
- Keep routine messages to one segment. Shorten copy and remove decorative emojis where they add no value.
- Stop messages after a reply or booking. A clear goal and stop condition prevent unnecessary follow-up.
- Clean invalid numbers. Repeated attempts to bad or unreachable contacts waste budget and make reporting harder.
- Respect consent and opt-outs. Compliance is not a cost-cutting trick. It is a basic requirement.
- Use MMS only when the media has a purpose. A plain reminder rarely needs an image.
- Review usage by workflow. A total bill tells you what you spent. Workflow-level review tells you why.
A practical monthly review
Export or review your phone usage, then compare spend with replies, bookings and closed opportunities. Look for sudden increases, multi-segment templates and contacts receiving messages from overlapping automations. Fix the largest source of waste first.

If your bill is growing but you cannot connect it to useful conversations, I can review the workflows and show you where the unnecessary sends are coming from.
